hungry

weirdest thing happened last night. i guess i should preface this encounter with the information that i have been tending the cutest family up in heber of 5 kids. yes, 5 kids!

all of us but the baby were surrounding a messy table late in the evening watching colt consume his dinner so we could eat peach cobbler together. out of nowhere colt exclaims (will not specify wording at this point in time) that the neighbors cows, 100 cows, had trampled the fence and were in our property. without skipping a beat 5 of us were running out the door screaming and pulling shoes on.

we all got tangled in the fence in our eagerness to chase the cows, but made it through to our goal and believe me nothing would be as scary as the five of us coming full speed ahead. ted was shirtless, i had mud all over from falling off the tramp, our hair was tangled. we were the wild things.

in the dusk the smell of childhood flooded me. wet fields, the sweet smell of manure and childrens voices, in this case loud ones. our feet were muddy and hands dirty-naturally a cow pie fight broke out. and ted watered the plants.

as we walked back dirty and happy and bruised and teasing each other i was overcome with hunger for my own family. for my kids in my arms and playing with each other. for dirty faces, diapers and kitchen.

we finished the evening with peach cobbler and went to bed feeling full, mostly.
